Dear Aunt Edna,
I hope this letter finds you, Mitzi, Muffy, Tuffy, and Mr. Fifi well. I understand you have all been training about 10 hours a day lately, and that the routine is coming together nicely. I regret to have to tell you that I won't be able to come to this year's "Mr. Fifi's Magical Poodle Circus" performance at the end of July, because I will be out of town. I know it is an annual tradition, but you see, this year I am going on an exciting weekend trip to New York City with the Salon Orange Moon girls for a three-day class at the Aveda Academy New York. We are all going to an intense class called "Be Inspired: New York", which is three days of cutting, coloring, styling, product usage, and makeup, all using inspirations from one of the most stylish cities in the world! Remember how you were inspired by the street performers in Central Park to outfit Mr. Fifi in a top hat and find a tutu for Tuffy? This is kind of like that, except on a scale that could change the way all of the Salon O.M. staff look at the skills we have, and even in the inspiration we draw from our surroundings here in Indianapolis. Aveda Academy New York is even going to provide live models for us, so I won't need to try any of the new highlight techniques on Muffy any more. What I am most excited about is that after learning what the latest trends are, how to execute them, how to tap into our own sources of inspiration (as well as those of our surroundings), we are going to learn a vital last puzzle piece: how to adapt these looks to our individual clients. It reminds me of that time you had Mitzi's hair braided and it looked so charming, but when you did the same to Muffy, well, it just didn't suite her face-shape and she ended up looking like a Doberman Pinscher. We want our clients to have elements of the newest techniques and looks in cut, color, and makeup, but we also want to tailor it to flatter each person to the fullest. Not everyone should wear skinny jeans, and not everyone wants the asymmetric mullet right off the fashion runways, either!
Mom told me that your theme for the show this year is "Pirates of the Caribbean" and that you were having a poodle-size pirate ship made. That is such a great idea! Were you able to find that three-cornered hat for Mr. Fifi? If you need any help building the set, I know a great construction crew. The interior of Salon Orange Moon is going to totally transform this week, and we are all so excited! I was there on Friday, and I got to go inside and see where Mike and Cindy had marked off where our cutting chairs would be, how the sinks are arranged, and I even practiced sitting at our super sleek color-bar and pretended I was a client having my color applied while sitting at the counter with my laptop in front of me. Cindy pointed out the wall where a local artisan's work will hang, and Mike thought of a great idea for storing towels on the spot. Mike is really handy, and I think he might be able to help you with figuring out how to hang Tuffy's trapeze from the pirate ship's mast. Anyway, the drywall is going up soon, too, and I don't think I'll recognize the place in a week!
Well, I guess that's all the news I have to report for now. Tell Mr. Fifi and the girls that I'm sorry to miss the show, but I'll still send their favorite Snickerpoodle cookies from Three Dog Bakery to the after-party.
Best of luck with the show!
Caroline
